Like everyone else on the planet, one of my many goals this year was to be healthier and fitter. After making myself sick to death of chocolate, sweets and fizzy juice over the Christmas period I was more than looking forward to getting back into the fitness mind set. So I set myself a few goals taking a month at a time.
January's goal was to not drink any fizzy juice and to gulp down at least 1.5ltrs of water everyday.
So far so good. I've actually impressed myself! I've not had a drop of fizzy juice and am not missing it either. 10 tablespoons of straight up sugar in a glass? No thanks.
I bought a big water bottle from Asda at the beginning of the month which holds a litre of liquid so I'm finding it really easy to measure how much I'm drinking in a day. All I have to do is fill that bad boy up twice a day and I'm set.
I was interested to do some research into the benefits of drinking more water and even though it wasn't brand new information (I mean who doesn't know water is good for you?), I thought I would share what I found on good ol' WebMD.
So here we have the 10 reasons why we should all drink more water:
1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue. This is one that I have definitely noticed. Before I would be so tired after finishing work and literally slump myself onto the couch but now I have a lot more energy to do more around the house etc.
2. Promotes Weight Loss. I'm happy with my weight and don't actually own a set of scales so wouldn't know how heavy I was anyway, but drinking water has stopped me from snacking at my desk and before dinner. It's handy to have a bottle right in front of you to grab instead of a packet of crisps.
3. Flushes Out Toxins. Who wants those anyway?
4. Improves Skin Complexion. This was a biggie for me when I decided to challenge myself to this. For the past couple of months my skin has been a total nightmare. I'm not saying its perfect now but definitely looking brighter so I'll take that.
5. Maintains Regularity. WebMD says : "Aids in digestion as water is essential to digest your food". This has also been a good one for me. I always get so bloated after meals but since I've made a point to drink a massive glass of water with every meal, not only am I not over eating but I'm not feeling as sluggish once I've finished eating either.
6. Boosts Immune System.
7. Prevents Cramps & Sprains.
8. Puts You in a Good Mood.
9. Natural headache reliever. My mum always told me to drink a glass of water whenever I complained about a headache and she was right- no need to take paracetamols (how do mums know everything?)
10. Saves Money. We're lucky enough to have this stuff come out of our taps! No more wasting £1 at a time on sugary drinks.
So there we go. Convinced yet?
My "Fit." board on pinterest (here) is also being used as a motivator as its now inundated with pictures of bikini clad girls and Victoria Secret models. I also went to Instagram and followed a few girls who seem to be fitness guru's. They definitely look like the know what they're talking about.
The best I've found on Instagram are:
- Kayla_itsines : This girl is amazing. She is a personal trainer and posts jaw dropping before & after's of her clients. Her little snapshot videos are also very motivating!
- Fitspiration : Just a looooot of pictures of women with the most perfect abs. One day... *sigh*
- Fresh_fitness_aus : "The bikini body trainers". Amazing bodies that make you wish you lived in Austraila.
